Instruction Based art
> Can an idea be a work of art?
Yes, as art comes in many forms and there is not a certain way i can be shown or made. > Is good art always skilful? What is "good art", no as art can’t always be what some people would define as skilful where as other people would see skilful art in a completely different way. > If you don't make works of art can you be an artist? Yes, as art comes in many different forms and the term "work of art" can be a interpreted in many different ways, art is massive and can be shown and created in so many different and unique ways. > Why might artists ask other people to make work for them? Some artist may ask for input or another persons opinion of a piece of work that they are working on to give them a wider understanding of what they are doing and enhance there view of the idea of looking out side the box. > What makes an instruction interesting? An instruction is a challenging perspective of something, this makes you work more for what you are trying to accomplish within the instruction, and gives you a guide line of what you need to do and to see different perspectives of what different they think the instruction means and the different out comes that come out of it. > Does a photographer always have to be the one who presses the shutter? No, as the photographer could set the shot up and get someone else t take the photos so that they could be in it. its all about the art of the photograph not always about who presses the shutter. |
Do It: the art of instructions
The Do It project started with conversation in a Paris cafe in 1993 and the brainchild of french artists Christian Boltanski and Bertrand Lavier with also Swiss curator hans Ulrich Obrist. It is a group of artists and normal people, where the artists put on a show or a personal project which gives instructions, commands to the audience, this is where people help the artists help to finalise and give them ideas of there work. The artists hope that the viewer gains a new view on how art is created and maybe start to create art themselves while also giving the viewer haves fun and makes a spectacle of themselves in the process. If I were to describe the project I would say it is an interesting and fun way to bring people together to create something you weren't planning on. My views on instruction based art have not really changed as of much grown onto my original views as it builds on the fact that it is about people interpretations to the instructions given.

My response to Baldissari
I was given a list of four things to take photographs off and I went out and took these four sacrifice photographs according to the listed objectives bellow:
> 'Photograph backs of things, underneath things, extreme foreshortening, uncharacteristic views'
> 'Defenestrate objects. Photo them mid-air'
> 'One person copies or makes up random captions. Another person takes photos. Match photos to captions.
> Repaired or patched art. Recycled. Find something broken and discarded. Perhaps in a thrift store. Mend it.

Evaluation
For this project we had to photograph with instruction from a certain list, i didn't enjoy this as there was less freedom in what i was doing and it was harder to find the exact listed items to photograph. I felt that I had to be very imaginative with the guide lines of the list as there I had to find things at the location I was at. The project felt very restricted in what i could and couldn't take photos of, however I overcame this by searching around and using my imagination to think out side the box like Baldissari did in his work. The images over all turned out pretty well i think i could have improved them if i had a bit more time and could go to several different locations. For this i think i took about 20 photographs, and only presented these 12 as i thought they showed the most accurate structure to the list that this project was focused on. During this project i felt like i started looking a things differently, and also looking at photography as more of a wider range of different genres and styles. I decided to not refine these photographs so that it gave a more raw and abstract view on what i interpreted this project as. over all i think i could have taken more time to take more photographs for each description of the projects instructions.
Baldessari's 'Assignment #8'
I was asked to to choose out of 14 different assignments and decided on doing the tenth one, Assignment #10 Photograph backs of things, underneaths of things, extreme foreshortenings, uncharacteristic views. Or trace them. I then went out and took a series of 14 different images which I thought interpreted that the instructions were asking of me to do.
Evaluation
For this project if felt like it went pretty well. I began this project by taking images of landscapes to in different positions that wouldn't be see to the normal view of the subjects.
Erwin Wurm - a Vienna-based sculptor
Erwin Wurm is an artist from Bruck an der Mur who was known for his individual and strange photography. He takes everyday items and objects and creates sculptures and art with people, some people would describe his work as breathtaking, astonishing. The project of his that we were looking at is his 'ONE MINUTE SCULPTURES' which has a models posing with everyday objects, which makes things strange and almost unnatural.
When trying to recreate and take my very own photographs in the fashion of Erwin Wurm, I observed that asking the man or woman to do sure matters felt abnormal at first however after getting over the preliminary uncomfortable feeling, the images ended up developing the equal emotions that Wurm's work evoked. I in my view certainly loved this fashion of images as it truly makes me chuckle. My favorite factor would be the truth that you can in truth do the first factor that pops into your idea as it is a "One Minute Sculpture", and no longer a good deal idea is required. Compared to the different duties we have been requested to do, I felt like this one did not restriction my creativity, no matter the reality that we had been in school.

My Response: One minute sculptures
We were shown Wurm's work and asked to create our own abstract ideas, bout to think carefully with what we are doing as we had a limit of 4 images. and there are the images i came up with in from the instructions.
Evaluation
In this take I felt that it was a very abstract and out of the ordinary, but I found it very interesting how something so abstract can look so distinctive and dominant within an image. I was very interested in how Erwin Wurm used everyday objects and incorporated it into his work. The most interesting image that i found worked well with Wurm's work is the first image in the sequence of 4 images, i chose this image as it shows the strange and out of the ordinary, which is the whole concept of the 'ONE MINUTE SCULPTURES'.
Design and make a game
We were asked to create some form of game or entertainment which included our own photography and multiple ideas initially came into my mind. Here is what I created:
My idea started with wanting to make monopoly but then I realized that there would need to be a lot of pieces and I wanted to come up with my own game, so I thought of pairspairs, a pairing game that will challenge the mind of memory and skill. This game is a pairing game where you lay all of the images face down and the colours facing towards you, one by one you take it in terns with as many players you have got to turn over the cards to try and find a pair. once all the cards have gone you count up all of the pairs and the person with the most pairs at the end of the game wins.
